The Season Begins

Football, Tis the Season, choices, picks, bring home the trophy, Super Bowl, best of the best, AFCThe Season Begins

Yes, it’s finally time to get down to some real business when it comes to the world of sports. (No offense to Serena at the U.S. Open, but her constant winning is not exactly new.) All this rain across the country has assured that lawns will be overgrown come Monday morning, unless citizens decide to use Saturday to mow. Why is that? Because football is back and Sundays are no longer “nothing to do” lazy days. The big screen TV’s are being booted up, Pizza Hut and all of its competitors are telling their employees right now how many millions of orders will need to be delivered, because no one is getting off their couches to do work, cook a meal, or anything else this weekend. Football is THE sport everyone waits for…and the waiting is over.

So…are you ready? Who’s gonna win? Who’s gonna lose? During the National Anthem will Kap of the 49ers stand up, kneel, sit down, or (frankly) do we really care? Will the Patriots be in major trouble having to play without Brady for a time? Will his ridiculous suspension bury the team so that even Brady and his arm won’t be able to get them out of the hole? Will RGIII show everyone they were wrong? Will Tim Tebow…oh, wait…that’s the Mets; not football. We shall move on and leave the Traveling Tebow show behind.

Choices and picks are being made all over the place. Yet, apparently, when it comes to choosing who will be the best of the best this season, most media men and women are stuck on the same old, same old. And when it comes to MVP’s, they’re picking the same old names that they always do. But will this year be different? Is there a Troy Aikman (second season) like surprise just waiting to be discovered?

When it comes to Super Bowl picks, the Packers, the Seahawks (ho, hum), and the Panthers are being heard everywhere.

The support being given behind the Packers comes from their QB Aaron Rodgers; people believe that his adversity last season was completely overplayed and he will have no problem coming back and winning another title and the league MVP.

More than one has called for the Panthers, who went 15-1 last year, to come back and make their mark. But many still don’t see why, if Cam Newton and his boys were so unbeatable, they could have been beaten by the Broncos who had a retiring QB and a team that didn’t look all that great when looking back on the season. Are they the best team in the NFC South? Absolutely. But the best team in the NFL? Not even close.

The Arizona Cardinals are being looked at and chosen by many to bring the Lombardi Trophy to a place where it belongs. Their coach, Bruce Arians, has certainly shown he knows his business, but QB Carson Palmer will still have to prove that he can get rid of whatever seems to stop him from going to the big show.

Chiefs and Steelers have been thrown around as the team that will head to the Super Bowl for the AFC, but the Bengals are on many lists to do it, as well. All three have a very good shot at it, so this trio may end up to be the most exciting contest this season sees.

MVP’s are all about QB’s, as usual, this year. The top names on the list are Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, and Mr. Carson Palmer. Every time that last name is spoken, you feel a bit like the Cardinals are going to finally walk away with it all. Or, perhaps, that’s just hope.

And, yes, there are one or two who still say that when it comes to the AFC, Brady will win another MVP award and the Patriots will take the AFC slot for the Super Bowl. Certainly could happen; the man and his coach have always made sure to be in the limelight – whether it be good or bad. But, like I said, wouldn’t it be interesting if the names this time around were not the good ole’ boys that are constantly spoken about?

Just remember, whatever happens in the coming months, make sure to tip the pizza delivery people. It’s not their fault if they knock on the door while your personal “favorites” are tanking.
